Police alleged that the suspect in the stabbing had been an acquaintance of Lerma and they had been visiting a woman who lives there.
Investigators believe that the two men started arguing when the suspect, 23-year-old Kevin A. Garcia, stabbed Lerma in the torso area and fled the scene, said Lt. Phil Cooke with the Santa Clara Police Department. At about 6:15 p.m., police and the Santa Clara Fire Department responded to the report of a person down, according to a statement from police, who found Lerma deceased when they arrived. With the help of the San Jose Police Department, investigators identified and located the suspect in San Jose, according to police.
Cooke said he could not elaborate on how the three people knew one another.
Garcia was scheduled to appear for an arraignment Wednesday afternoon in Santa Clara County Superior Court.
