A 37-year-old Hollister man was stabbed to death in a Santa Clara apartment complex over the weekend, and police arrested a San Jose man suspected in the crime, according to the Santa Clara Police Department.

Ralph S. Lerma, of Hollister, was stabbed Friday evening at the complex in the 1400 block of Don Avenue in Santa Clara, according to a press release from the office. Police alleged that the suspect in the stabbing had been an acquaintance of Lerma and they had been visiting a women who lives there.

Investigators believe that the two men started arguing when the suspect, 23-year-old Kevin A. Garcia, stabbed Lerma in the torso area and fled the scene, said Lt. Phil Cooke with the Santa Clara Police Department. At about 6:15 p.m., police and the Santa Clara Fire Department responded to the report of a person down, according to a statement from police, who found Lerma deceased when they arrived.

With the help of the San Jose Police Department, investigators identified and located the suspect in San Jose, according to police.

Cooke said he could not elaborate on how the three people knew one another.

Garcia is scheduled to appear for an arraignment Wednesday afternoon in Santa Clara County Superior Court.
