Hollister School District Board of Trustees hired Ron Crates to serve as the district’s interim superintendent yesterday.

Crates, 58, resigned June 29 as superintendent of Redwood City Elementary District, where he served for 15 years. The district serves about 9,000 students.

According to a press release from the Hollister School District, Crates’ compensation package will be equivalent to the $139,500 in salary and benefits earned by out-going

Superintendent Judith Barranti. His contract with HSD will begin August 15 and end on June 30, 2006.

According to a press release from Redwood City Elementary District, Crates will also receive salary and benefits from Redwood School Elementary District for 18 months of the three years that remained on his contract.

“Dr. Crates recognizes opportunities for growth that lay ahead for the Hollister School District,” Board President Margie Barrios said in a press release. “He plans to work alongside teachers, students, administrators, staff and community members to set and achieve goals and objectives for stability and success.”

The district’s four other board members agreed.

According to news reports, Crates was told by the Redwood City board members that they were interested in a change in leadership. However, board members praised his efforts.

“Our school district is in significantly better condition today from Dr. Crates’ leadership,” Redwood City district officials said in its press release.

Crates received his doctorate from Northern Illinois University.

HSD board members could not be reached for comment.
