The Hollister Veterans of Foreign Wars is inviting all seventh
and eighth grade students with a love for this country to enter the
annual Patriot’s Pen Essay contest.
The contest is open to all seventh and eighth grade students in
the county whether they are attending public or private schools, or
if they are being home schooled. The winner of the essay contest
will receive $200.

Originally called the Patriotic Youth Essay Contest, the competition was created by the national VFW. However officials with the Hollister VFW Post 9242 select their own theme for the local contest. This year’s theme is: “My Dream for America.”
Youths who want to participate in the essay contest can pick up entry forms and information sheets at the County Superintendent of Schools’ office located at 460 Fifth St. next to the San Benito County Courthouse.
The essays must either be typed or printed from a computer and must be submitted to the Hollister VFW post by Saturday, Nov. 1, contest chairman John Buchanan said.
“We simply want to create an awakening to the spirit of patriotism in our kids,” Buchanan said.
Essays must be between 300 and 400 words in length.
There are three prizes, with the top one being $200 and a chance for the winner to move on to district, state and national levels.
In the past, the competition has had more than 60 local students enter with hopes of reaching the national finals.
