Police briefs

A Hollister woman was arrested in downtown Mountain View early Sunday morning on suspicion of punching another woman and then slamming her head into the ground several times, police said.

The brutal beating stemmed from a verbal altercation between the two women just after 2 a.m. at Hope and Villa streets, said Jaime Garrett, a spokeswoman for the Mountain View Police Department.

The cause of the argument remained under investigation Monday, Garrett said.

Witnesses told police that Stephanie Munoz, 18, of Hollister started hitting the other woman and knocked her to the ground, Garrett said. Munoz then allegedly bashed the woman’s head into the ground multiple times.

The victim did not throw a single punch, Garrett said.

Munoz was still crouched over the woman when police arrived at about 2:07 a.m., Garrett said. She allegedly ran away but was apprehended after a brief foot pursuit.

The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment. Her injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, Garrett said.

Police arrested Munoz on suspicion of battery with serious bodily injury and booked her into Santa Clara County jail.
