Local writes guide for home caregivers

Linda Lou Luttrell, a Hollister resident and graduate of Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, used her experience as a home caregiver to write a guide for others. The self-published book offers 50-plus pages of insight from Lutrell, who served as a caregiver for family members. Though she acknowledges that she is not a doctor, nurse or CNA, she writes in her introduction, “I just care about people.”

Luttrell started working as a caregiver in 1991, and has worked with stroke patients as well as Alzheimer’s patients, according to her book. Some of the chapters found in her book discuss tips on communicating with patients, administering medication and respecting a family’s needs and wishes.

The book, “Loving Home Care,” contains a list of supplies or aids that Luttrell has found helpful through the years, as well as a chapter with national and local resources that can be used by caregivers or families in need of a caregiver.

Luttrell offered book signings the past weekend in Gilroy, and future book signing dates will be listed on her Web site. The book can be purchased for $15 at www.lovinghomecarebook.com and 10 percent of the proceeds go to the Central Coast Hospice Foundation.
