Event will offer info on programs and housing opportunities

The public is invited to a free homebuyer workshop sponsored by the San Benito County Housing and Economic Development Department on Saturday, Feb. 7 in downtown Hollister.

The workshop, a follow-up to a September 2008 event that attracted 50 participants, will discuss the process of buying a home, below-market rate housing opportunities in the city and county, down payment and closing costs assistance programs, and specialized home buyer programs.

Each speaker at the event will be accompanied by a Spanish-speaking translator.

Christopher “C.J.” Valenzuela, the county’s housing programs coordinator, said the Housing and Economic Development Department is in the process of developing other consumer- and housing-related workshops for the community, such as foreclosure prevention, credit management and financial literacy.

As of November 2008, the median home price in San Benito County was $273,250 and the median income was $78,000, “meaning that the equilibrium between affordability and income for home ownership purposes is now a reality for many local citizens,” Valenzuela said.

The homebuyer workshop will be held in conference room 204 of the Veteran’s Memorial Building, 649 San Benito St. Doors open at 9 a.m. Workshop hours are 9:30 a.m. to noon.

To RSVP or more information, contact Valenzuela by phone at 637-1763 or by e-mail at
