A small, 11-8 deficit in the first quarter for the No. 9 Anzar girls’ basketball team quickly got out of control in the second and third quarters Thursday night against No. 8 Summit Prep, as the Redwood City high school opened up a double-digit lead at halftime and never looked back en route to a 40-25 victory in the opening round of the Central Coast Section Division V Championships.

Anzar’s three-point hole following the first quarter turned into a 23-10 deficit at halftime and a 39-13 deficit entering the fourth quarter after it compiled just five points total in the second and third quarters combined.

Summit Prep was limited to just a single point in the final stanza, but the team’s lead was too great for the Hawks to make a comeback.

“We were just asleep. We were not there mentally,” Anzar head coach Sam Stewart said. “We started out well. But in the second and third quarter, I don’t know where our head was.”

Melissa Weckerle led all scorers with 16 points in the game for Anzar, which finishes its season with an 8-15 overall record.

Meanwhile, Dheyani Malde led Summit Prep with 14 points, while both Kassy Carroll and Sydnee Nathim each chimed in with eight points apiece. Summit Prep (11-7) will advance to Saturday’s quarterfinal round at top-seeded Pinewood (21-5).

Tip-off is 2 p.m.

“I thought we should have beaten them,” Stewart said. “But we just didn’t show up.”
