SANTA CRUZ
After its scheduled Coastal Athletic League opener against Oakwood was canceled, the Anzar girls basketball team officially kick-started league play on Friday in Santa Cruz against Pacific Collegiate. But second-half struggles by the Hawks allowed the Pumas to take a narrow halftime lead and convert it into a comfortable 36-22 victory.
Anzar trailed Pacific Collegiate 20-16 at halftime, but were outscored 16-6 in the second half.
“They made some adjustments and got some quick, easy baskets,” Anzar head coach Mike Bonomi said. “They beat us with execution and coaching, to be honest.”
Kelsey Robledo led Anzar with 16 points, seven rebounds, three steals and a block, while teammates Melissa Weckerle, Delaney McKinney and Britteny Doty each added two points apiece.
McKinney had three rebounds, meanwhile, and Doty pulled down four rebounds.
The Hawks played a man-to-man defense when Pacific Collegiate began to pull away, forcing Anzar to switch to a zone. But the change didn’t slow the Pumas down.
“They still got some baskets,” Bonomi said. “We weren’t rotating over the top and the point guard made her way to the hoop.
“We just went cold.”
Anzar is now 0-1 in the CAL, 2-8 overall.
The Hawks will host Marina Tuesday in San Juan Bautista. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
