Sober Grad donations needed
HOLLISTER – Local businesses and individuals are lining up to make contributions to ensure that this year’s Sober Grad Night celebration at San Benito High School is a success.
But more donors are needed if the event is to remain a popular, safe way to celebrate. Last year’s event attracted 424 of 531 graduates, continuing a trend of increasing attendance each year.
To make a donation, checks may be made payable to SBHS Sober Grad Night, and sent to 141 Holliday Drive, Hollister, CA 95023. To volunteer or donate raffle prizes, call Hydie McDonald at 902-8608.

Rally to protest state budget proposal
HOLLISTER – The Monterey County Education coalition and its partners will be rallying against Governor Schwarzenegger’s proposed budget cuts Wednesday, May 14 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the corner of Fourth Street and San Benito Street; Nash Road and Airline Hwy.; and Nash Road and San Benito Street.
Schwarzenegger is expected to release his revised 2008-09 state budget May 14. The budget includes nearly $5 billion in cuts for public schools.

Passport gala dining available
TRES PINOS – The Culinary and Hospitality Foundation of San Benito County and the San Benito County Winegrowers Association are hosting a benefit dinner at the Inn at Tres Pinos on Friday, May 16.
The foundation encourages careers in the restaurant and hospitality industry through scholarships to local students.
This year’s dinner is a five-course meal paired with 11 wines from eight different wineries.
The menu features seared giant sea scallops, baby Bibb lettuce salad, aged Parmesan with 100-year-old balsamic vinegar, stuffed filet mignon, and poached pears.
Tickets start at $150 each, and include a complimentary pass to the Passport Weekend, a local wine-tasting event held the same weekend.
County holds water awareness festival
HOLLISTER – Learn to be water efficient at the Water Awareness Festival Saturday, May 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park on Memorial Drive. There will be prizes, giveaways and free refreshments. This event is sponsored by the Water Resources Association of San Benito County.
Students exhibiting art
HOLLISTER – “Art Out Loud!: Colorful Images of Young Minds,” is set for Sunday, May 18 from 2-7 p.m. in the San Benito High School Cafeteria.
The exhibit of student art includes a free artists’ reception during the event. More than 500 student pieces in various media will be on display.
An awards presentation at 5:30 p.m. will recognize the artists whose work is on display. Original student artwork will be available for sale at the event. Plus, there will be a drawing for teachers’ artwork donated to benefit San Benito High School’s arts programs.

Farmers Market to open
HOLLISTER – The Farmers Market will open its 2008 season Wednesday, May 21 from 3-7 p.m. on the lawn at the corner of Fourth and San Benito streets. Local farmers and vendors will be selling a variety of items, including: traditional and organic fruits, vegetables and herbs; fresh baked goods; free range chicken and organic beef; locally produced olive oil; fresh cut flowers; note cards; local art and barbecued dinners to eat at the market or take home.
Participation in the market encourages sustainable agriculture, strengthens the local economy and helps preserve the local heritage. Consumers purchase items directly from the farmer or producer with no middleman. Payment methods are determined by the seller. Eagle Recycling will be at the first market with free reusable bags while supplies last. The Farmers Market is sponsored by the Hollister Downtown Association. Memorial Day activities planned
HOLLISTER – Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Ladies Auxiliary in Hollister and San Juan Bautista have scheduled various activities for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday. Members of both groups will begin distributing Buddy Poppies in front of several locations on Friday, May 23 and Saturday, May 24 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Proceeds raised from the poppy distribution are used to benefit disabled and needy veterans and the widows and orphans of deceased veterans.
Memorial Day services begin at 9 a.m. at the San Juan Cemetery, followed by a service at the IOOF Cemetery at 10 a.m. and Calvary Cemetery at 11 a.m. Services will conclude at the Veterans Memorial Building on San Benito Street with a barbecued chicken lunch beginning at around noon.
Church blood drive set
SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – Mission San Juan Bautista will sponsor a parish blood drive from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 25, at Casa Maria at 600 First St., San Juan Bautista. The bloodmobile will be located in the parking lot and blood will be drawn by the staff of Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula’s Blood Center.
Blood is needed daily for stroke patients, cancer patients, unexpected surgeries and accidents. It cannot be manufactured and the constant demand can be met only by regular donations of healthy volunteer donors.
Potential blood donors must be at least 17 years of age. There is no upper age limit for healthy people. All donors must be in good health and weigh at least 110 pounds.

GET YOUR BLOCK PARTY PERMITS
HOLLISTER – Anyone wishing to close a city of Hollister street for a block party at any time must have permission from the city. Applications are available in the city clerk’s office, City Hall, 375 Fifth St., Hollister or by calling the clerk’s office at 636-4304.
Applicants must submit a completed application for a block party as well as a hold harmless agreement, both of which are available from the clerk’s office, and must also submit a certificate of insurance naming the city of Hollister as an additional insured. certificates of insurance are usually available from a resident’s homeowners insurance company.
Normally a request for a block party is required to be submitted 30 days prior to an event. However, due to increased requests for Fourth of July Block Party Permits and the schedule of city council meetings, all completed applications for a block party permit for this July 4 must be submitted to the clerk’s office no later than Thursday, June 5, at 5 p.m.

HOLLISTER – The graduation committee at San Benito High School is looking for parents of juniors to volunteer to help during graduation this year on June 6.

HOLLISTER – The annual membership meeting of the Friends of the San Benito County Free Library will be held Tuesday, May 13 at noon in the Barbara Memorial room at the library, 470 Fifth St. Guest speaker will be Martha Moses, who will talk about her recent trip to India. STATE-LOCAL PARTNERSHIP HELPS ARTS COUNCIL
HOLLISTER – The San Benito County Arts Council received funds through the California Arts Council State Local Partnership Program to support local art activities with regranting.
Local organizations and individuals can now apply for funds through June 2, 2008. Projects must be completed by Dec. 31, 2008. The money must be used to develop and encourage projects for the cultural and artistic enrichment of San Benito County. Copies of the application are available at www.sanbenitoarts.org or by requesting a hard copy from the Grants Committee, PO Box 692, Hollister, Calif., 95024.
Applications must meet the follow criteria:
– Provide access to high quality artistic experiences for all residents
– Show initiative, innovation, creativity and potential for excellence
– Well planned, structured and organized to insure success
– Realistic budget, including use of other resources.
The community will review applications in June and there are opens on the grants committee. To apply for the committee, submit a letter of interested to Sharlene Van Rooy.
