GOP meeting set

Local libraries sponsor summer reading program
SAN BENITO – The San Benito County Free Library and the San Juan Bautista City Library are sponsoring “Catch the Reading Bug” a summer reading program for children. The program is already underway at the SBC Free Library and will continue through July 23. Children registering for the program will receive a packet that contains a reading log, a contract and puzzles and games. Every child who completes the program will receive a new book. Additionally, each Wednesday during the program the library will offer a wide variety of free programs and activities including crafts, a bug costume parade July 2, a scavenger hunt July 16 and a special awards ceremony July 23. San Juan’s library will begin its children’s reading program Tuesday, July 1. The program, which is open to children ages 0-17 years, will run through Aug. 18. Prizes will be awarded, including a grand prize to the child who reads the most books. An ice cream social is will be held Monday, Aug. 18 at 2:30 p.m. For more information, call 623-4687.
Fire prompts disaster assistance
SACRAMENTO – The U.S. Small Business Administration staff are accepting applications for disaster assistance for physical damage or economic injury caused by the Summit Fire in Santa Cruz County. Businesses in Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Benito, San Mateo and Santa Clara are eligible if they were impacted by the fire. Applications for physical damage assistance are due Aug. 11 and for economic injury are due by March 12, 2009.
“Historically in fire disasters SBA has found that most property owners have insurance coverage,” said Bruce S. Thompson, SBA’s region IX adminstrator. “However, SBA has found that for many property owners their insurance doesn’t cover the full loss. SBA’s disaster loans are available to cover the gap between the cost of rebuilding and the amount of insurance settlements.
Loans are low interest and can be for up to $200,000 for individuals. Business and nonprofits may borrow up to $1.5 million.

Disco Inferno
SALINAS – The American Red Cross is hosting Disco Inferno Aug. 2 from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m., a fundraiser at the Fox Discotheque, 239 Main Street in Salinas.
The event will feature the 70s music of Bubba G. Scotch, as well as prizes for the best costume and the best dance moves. Hors d’oeuvres will be served. No host bar.

State of emergency in Monterey and Trinity counties
MONTEREY – Governor Schwarzenegger proclaimed a state of emergency in Monterey and Trinity Counties as a result of the Basin Complex Fire, Gallery Fire and Lime Complex Fire. The proclamation utilizes all resources consistent with the state’s authority under the California Disaster Assistance Act.
In addition to ensuring that local communities have the resources they need to fight these fires, the Governor is also aiding in the recovery efforts. While in Chico, the Governor will announce $20 million for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) to cover the costs of the Humboldt and Ophir Fires in Butte County earlier this month. Because the Governor declared a state of emergency for those fires on June 11, the state was able to immediately process the Executive Order and distribute the money. Also, to help the victims of the Ophir and Humboldt Fires in Butte County and the Marin Fire in Santa Cruz County, the Governor on Sunday signed an Executive Order to waive fees and assist with recovery efforts.
