– Western Recycling is holding an electronic waste recycling
collection Sat., Dec. 1 at Hollister Muffler, 759 San Benito St.,
from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will benefit R. O. Hardin
Elementary School, which will receive part of the proceeds for each
pound of waste collected. The items that will
support the fund-raiser are computers, computer monitors and
televisions.
Western Recycling staff will also accept microwaves, small
appliances, cell phones, rechargeable batteries, DVD players, CD
players and game systems, though no money from those items will go
to the school.

Library closed for Thanksgiving holiday

HOLLISTER – The San Benito County Free Library will be closed during the Thanksgiving holiday beginning Thursday, Nov. 22 through Sunday, Nov. 25. The library will return to its regular business hours on Monday, Nov. 26, opening to the public at 10 a.m. Library materials can be returned during the closure through the outside library book drops located in front of the library’s entrance.

Growth management meeting

HOLLISTER – The Hollister planning department staff is inviting the public to select criteria to score development projects under the city’s growth management ordinance.

The meeting will be at Veteran’s Hall, Rm. 218, 649 San Benito St., on Nov. 27 at 6 p.m. Information on the ordinance is also available for review at City Hall, 375 Fifth St., during regular business hours.

Clean up the riverbed

HOLLISTER – The San Benito High School Outdoor Club will sponsor a clean-up event in the San Benito Riverbed south of the Hwy. 156 bridge just west of Buena Vista Road on Saturday, Dec. 1 from 9 a.m. to noon. Community volunteers are invited to participate. Trash bags will be provided. Participants are asked to bring gloves, sun protection and something to drink. Become a part of Marguerite Maze history

HOLLISTER – Marguerite Maze Middle School is selling 6’x6′ tiles to be individually painted by students, staff and alumni for use in a mural celebrating the school’s history. The tiles, which will be kiln fired after painting, will be adhered to the outside walls of Maze’s courtyard in time for the school’s 14th anniversary next year.

All past and present students and staff are invited to purchase a tile to decorate. Tiles will be sold in front of the school on Friday-Saturday, Nov. 23-24, from 2:30-4 p.m. Painting can be done at that time. To arrange another time, or for more information, call Timi King at 636-1541.

Horse properties management seminar set for Dec. 8

AROMAS – The Livestock and Land program will host a day-long workshop titled “Managing Horse Properties in Winter” on Saturday, Dec. 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 101 Livestock, located at 4400 Hwy. 101 in Aromas.

Topics will include reducing mud and runoff, geotextiles fabrics and footing materials for paddocks and stalls, useful manure management tips and natural insect and dust control. Retired Teachers’ luncheon

HOLLISTER – The San Benito County chapter of the California Retired Teachers will conduct its next business meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 5 beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Paine’s Restaurant. Following the meeting, lunch will be served with a choice of either top sirloin steak or chicken parmigiana.

Eat like an Ohlone Indian

GILROY – Learn how the Ohlone Indians used their natural resources to create their daily diet during a special interactive demonstration on the Ohlone diet on Saturday, Nov. 24 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Coyote Lake-Harvey Bear Ranch County Park.

Participants will learn how the Ohlone gathered, harvested and processed their food and will also be able to taste different types of foods. Layered clothing, comfortable shoes and a water bottle are suggested. For more information, call Ranger Chris Crockett at 408-842-7800.

HOLLISTER – The Baler Education Foundation will hold its annual meeting Monday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. at San Benito High School in conference room 132. The meeting is open to the public.
