Foundation holds annual meeting

HOLLISTER – The Baler Education Foundation will hold its annual meeting Monday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. at San Benito High School in conference room 132. The meeting is open to the public.

Holte Dinner needs help

HOLLISTER – The Holte Holiday Dinner Committee still needs monetary and food donations for the annual Thanksgiving feast. Food donations of turkeys, potatoes, chicken broth and stuffing mix can be dropped off at Dave Baumgartner’s office at 470 Tres Pinos Road in Hollister. Money donations can be sent to San Benito Bank, 300 Tres Pinos Road, care of the Holte Holiday Dinner Account.

This year’s dinner will be Thursday, Nov. 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hollister Community Center, 300 West St. For more information, call 637-0566.

Homeless Task Force Donations

HOLLISTER – The Homeless Task Force is looking to raise $20,000 to help them meet their operating needs for the 2007-2008 season. The shelter opens after Thanksgiving. Donations can be sent care of the Homeless Task Force of San Benito County to PO Box 2710 Hollister, CA 95023.

Donate blood during monthly drive

HOLLISTER – The American Red Cross will hold its monthly Hollister Blood Drive Thursday, Dec. 6 from 1:30-6:30 p.m. at the church hall of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints, 1670 Cienega Road. Go to www.BeADonor.com (code: ROTARY) to schedule an appointment.

Show off Gingerbread skills

HOLLISTER – San Benito craftsmen are invited to build a miniature house for the annual Gingerbread House Contest. Contest entry forms must be completed and returned to the Hollister Downtown Association by Friday, Nov. 30. Houses will be on display from Dec. 7 through Dec. 14 for voting. A reception will be held Dec. 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. at The Elegant Touch, 601-A San Benito Street.

The only rules are that the houses much be edible and they must be able to fit on a 24 x 24 inch display board. Non-edible pieces cannot be used on the house, but can be used as part of the landscape.

The categories include:

Commercial – employees of sponsors or cooking/baking businesses

General family

General business

Children ages 8 to 12

Children 7 and under.

Awards will be given in each category, as well as a People’s Choice Award and a Best of show. The houses will be displayed at local businesses during the judging period.

DMB collects donations for local food drive

HOLLISTER – DMB El Rancho San Benito is collecting donations for the 2007 Second Harvest Food Drive. Non-perishable items needed include: peanut butter, beans, canned fruits and vegetables, canned meat and other canned meals, canned foods with pop-top lids, stews and soups, pasta, cereal and fruit juices.

DMB staff members will pick up any food or monetary donations. To schedule a pick-up, call Katrina Kessler at 635-5924. Local merchants and companies can drop off donations at the DMB lobby, 615-A San Benito St., Ste. 101 (above Hard Times Cafe). Donations can be made online at www.thefoodbank.org (click on DONATE NOW). DMB is hoping to collect more than 16,231 pounds of food.

Event honors Native American month

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – In honor of Native American month Grand Chief Woableza, a native elder and story-teller will speak about native prophecies. He will also present his documentary, “The White Way,” a film about a sacred gathering of indigenous leaders from the Americas who held ceremonies to heal the earth.

The event will take place on Saturday, Nov 17 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Mission San Juan Bautista Teaching Center on Second St. The event is free, but donations are appreciated. Parking is free. For more information call Laynee Bluebird Reyna at 623-4771.

Raffle will benefit residents with disabilities

HOLLISTER – Social Vocational Services, a local provider of services for people with disabilities, is holding a raffle. One hundred percent of the proceeds will benefit their clients. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. Enter to win one of three baskets: Community Donations, Emergency Preparedness, or New Year’s Eve.

Field Trip to San Francisco

HOLLISTER- The Hollister Symphony Group announces a new “Tag-a-Long Series” for people who want to enjoy a day in San Francisco. T’is the season for shopping or attending the symphony.

The bus will leave Dunne Park at 8:30 a.m. and arrive in Union Square at approximately 10:30 a.m. The bus will leave Davies Symphony Hall at approximately 4 p.m. and arrive at Dunne Park at approximately 6:30 p.m.

‘The Art of Giving’

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – A benefit dinner-dance this Saturday, Nov. 17, at San Juan Oaks Golf Club will give a needed boost to local non-profit organizations.

“The Art of Giving” starts at 6 p.m. with a champagne reception, followed by dinner, a live auction and dancing. A silent auction will provide an opportunity to meet local artisans.

Fire season ends

MONTEREY – The California Department of Forestry last week lifted a suspension of burning on private lands in San Benito and Monterey counties. The suspension was imposed on Oct. 23.

Fire season is still in effect and the potential for wildfire remains, according to a release from CDF.

Yard burning is prohibited until Dec. 1 by the regional Air Pollution Control District.
