New Year’s party
HOLLISTER – San Benito County LULAC is again sponsoring a New Year’s Eve Dance Party featuring popular local deejay Sergio Flores’ “Sonido Con Sabor” from 8 p.m.-1 a.m. Dec. 31 at the Veterans’ Memorial Building in Hollister.
Flores began his career as a student, entertaining local audiences while paying for his education with the payment he received, while becoming one of the region’s most sought-after entertainers. This New Year’s LULAC will honor Flores for his support of many community and school events, and his other contributions toward the local community.
Recognizing a difficult economy LULAC reduced ticket prices this year to just $25 per person if purchased in advance from local businesses or any LULAC member. Tickets at the door will be $35.
Participating businesses are Hollister Drive In Market, Las Palmas Market, Righetti Liquors, Guadalupana Market and Doña Esther Restaurant in San Juan Bautista.
Doors will open at 7 p.m., and dancing continues until 1 a.m.
Proceeds will go toward the 2009 LULAC scholarship fund and will be awarded to students from San Benito County schools next May.
Advance tickets also may be purchased by sending a check to P.O. Box 1446, Hollister, 95024.
LULAC, the League of United Latin American Citizens, is the largest and oldest Hispanic advocacy group in the nation, with more than 700 councils.
VNA gets a gift
HOLLISTER – Santa Claus made an early visit to the Hollister office of the nonprofit Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice this year, when some new office equipment was delivered as a gift from the employees at M.C. Electronics.
“Our new combination fax, printer, scanner and copier will really be helpful with all the paperwork we process to make home visits to our hundreds of patients each year,” said Eileen Ash, clinical supervisor of VNA’s North County office.
“We know the VNA and Hospice helps so many people in our communities,” said Jona Lucas, an M.C. Electronics employee, “and we just wanted to help them do their job. When my daughter was born prematurely, VNA came out periodically to check on her progress and it really is a great thing that you do.”
M.C. Electronics, at 1891 Airway Drive, also provided some books that VNA volunteers can read to hospice patients, providing time for the family to do other things. VNA’s interdisciplinary hospice concept brings physicians, pediatric nurses, social workers, therapists, clergy, administrators and volunteers as a team to provide care and support for the patient and family in the home.
Ash said VNA is proud of the community support VNA and hospice has received since 1951: “We really rely on community support to help us care for our patients.”
Although a doctor’s referral is needed for VNA to provide home care, Ash said patients and families are encouraged to call VNA at 637-6724 and let VNA talk with their doctor about arranging home care when appropriate. VNA home healthcare and hospice care is covered by Medicare and many insurance plans, and is provided for all who are in need within available VNA resources as provided by generous gifts from the community.
