Backyard burn season begins

HOLLISTER – The annual backyard burn season for burning natural vegetation runs from Dec. 1 through April 30, 2009 in Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz counties. Residents of one-or-two family dwellings may burn clean and dry yard trimmings grown on property. Residents are required to check with the local fire agency to see if burning is allowed near their structure, and to secure necessary permits.

Burning cleared wood or brush from commercial or home development projects is allowed during the backyard burn season. A district smoke management permit is required.

To find which days are “burn days,” call the California Air Resources Board at 800-CAL-BURN (800-225-2876). The information is updated daily at 4 p.m. with forecasts for the following day. The board selects days when good smoke dispersion conditions are forecasted.

In addition, residents are encouraged to dispose of natural vegetation by alternative methods when possible, such as chipping, composting, or taking wood waste to landfills where it can be mulched or transported to facilities that burn wood waste to generate electricity.
