Proceeds from the fund-raiser will go to paying veterinary expenses for the animals rescued from the Hollister Animal Shelter. The sale will feature Christmas items, furniture and other items. For more information, call 636-7559.
Community Pantry carwash
HOLLISTER – Community Pantry will be hosting a car wash at the Sunnyslope Medical Building, 930 Sunnyslope Road, Sat. Dec. 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Christmas food baskets.
San Felipe Road detour
HOLLISTER – There will be a detour at the intersection of Hwy. 25 and San Felipe Road starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18 through 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20. Drivers travelling northbound on San Felipe will be prohibited from making left turns onto Hwy. 25 toward Gilroy. Traffic will be routed to Wright Road, where left turns will be permitted. Left turns from southbound Hwy. 25 onto San Felipe Road will also be prohibited.
Note that this is contingent on weather permitting. Rain will cancel the work.

Spring class registration under way at Gavilan
HOLLISTER – New and continuing students can now register for spring courses at any of the Gavilan College campuses. Continuing students can register in person or online at www.gavilan.edu. New students can register in person at Gavilan College locations in Hollister, Gilroy and Morgan Hill.

TV volunteers sought
GILROY – CMAP, the community TV station serving Hollister, San Juan Bautista and Gilroy, is seeking volunteers for studio and field productions airing on local community cable. Volunteers need no prior experience, as CMAP will provide training through the program.
Those interested may attend an orientation today at 4 p.m. at Gavilan College in Room L-139. The orientation also will be aired on cable Channel 20. Airtimes are available at www.mycmap.org.

Sober Grad Night Committee holds fund-raiser
HOLLISTER – San Benito High School’s Sober Grad Night Committee will hold a fund-raising event at Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Parlor and Papa Murphy’s Pizza from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 20. The two businesses will donate to Sober Grad Night a percentage from regularly priced ice cream and pizza items sold during the event. Coupons are required, but will be available at the door of each business.
New Year’s Eve party
HOLLISTER – The Italian Catholic Federation will host a Family New Year’s Eve Dinner Party at Bolado Park from 6 p.m. to midnight on Monday, Dec. 31. The evening will begin with hors d’ ouvres at 6 p.m. followed by a steak dinner at 7 p.m. and music by Tim Traversari until midnight.

Tiles celebrate Maze’s history
HOLLISTER – The Marguerite Maze Parent-Teacher-Student Organization is selling ceramic tiles to be hung on a wall inside the school’s courtyard as a way of celebrating the school’s 14-year history. The tiles can be painted with pictures, designs, logos and names and are available to all current and former students, parents of students and staff members. The project is expected to be completed in March 2008.
Tiles for the Marguerite Maze Mural Project can be purchased in front of the school every Wednesday and Friday from 2:30-4 p.m. through Dec. 21 and again on Saturday, Dec. 22 from 2:30-4 p.m. Tiles are $20 each. For more information, contact Timi King at 636-1541.
‘Laughing All the Way’
SALINAS – A lighthearted comedy presentation filled with music and skits is planned for 11 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 23.

Control burn planned
BITTERWATER – The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is planning a prescribed burn in the remote Laguna Mountain area of southernmost San Benito County some time between now and the end of January. Weather permitting, 20 to 100 acres will be burned.
“The prescribed burns will be conducted to improve wildlife habitat and reduce hazard fuels in the area,” according to Mike Chiodini, BLM fire mitigation and education specialist.

Fire season ends
MONTEREY – Recent rainfall and forecasts of more of the same have prompted CalFire, formerly California Department of Forestry, to lift burn restrictions imposed last June in San Benito and Monterey Counties.
Burning is now allowed as follows:
– Open burning is currently allowed, in compliance with a restricted temporary burning permit. Visit a local CalFire station or call 333-2600 for more information.
– Use of campfires must be in compliance with Public Resources Code section 4433.
