Condor release scrubbed

PAICINES – The planned release of two juvenile California condors last Saturday was postponed due to the unsettled weather in the area.

Monument staff will announce a new release date once one is set.

ALBA teaches computer basics

SALINAS – The Agriculture and Land-Based Training Association, (ALBA) is offering a series of Computer Basics courses on Wednesdays, including Nov. 12, 19 and 25, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The first class met Nov. 5. All courses will be taught in English and Spanish and at no cost.

Classes will cover the basics in computer orientation, Word and Excel applications, Internet navigation and e-mail. This is an opportunity to be introduced to computer skills. The short course is recommended for prospective students interested in taking the Farmer Education Program (PEPA) beginning in December.

The classes are made possible with support from the Hewlett-Packard Microenterprise Program and Rabobank, N. A. The classes will be at ALBA’s main office at 1700 Old Stage Road, located eight miles south of Salinas. For more information call 758-1469. New animal shelter grand opening

HOLLISTER – Staff members of the Hollister Animal Shelter are hosting a grand opening at their new location, 1331 South St., on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will include guided tours of the facility, free microchip certificates for the first 100 visitors, low-cost spay/neuter vouchers for the first 50 visitors, pet adoptions and a chance to learn about volunteer opportunities.

City and county officials will also be on hand. The City of Hollister Animal Shelter staff cares for 2,600 animals each year. For more information, call 636-4320.

Census job testing scheduled

HOLLISTER – The U.S. Census Bureau has scheduled job testing in preparation for the 2010 census. Temporary and full-time positions are available.

Testing is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the One Stop Career Center at 1111 San Felipe Road, suite 107 in Hollister.

Census day is scheduled for April 1, 2010.

Stage company needs board members

HOLLISTER – The San Benito Stage Company is seeking board members to take office in January. A letter of interest and a resume should be sent by Nov. 15 to: SBSC P.O. Box 1893, Hollister, CA 95024.

Ideal candidates will be creative and professional, and willing to serve and oversee the growth of Hollister’s nonprofit community theater. One of the four seats is for treasurer.

Mission San Juan sets blood drive

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – Mission San Juan Bautista, will sponsor a blood drive from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16, at Casa Maria adjacent to the mission at600 First St., San Juan Bautista. The bloodmobile will be located in the parking lot and blood will be drawn by the staff of Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula’s Blood Center.

Blood is needed daily for stroke patients, cancer patients, unexpected surgeries and accidents. In addition, it is now needed in larger quantities as new life-saving techniques are developed that require more blood than the amounts normally kept on hand. It cannot be manufactured and the constant demand can be met only by regular donations of healthy volunteer donors.

Potential blood donors must be at least 17 years of age. There is no upper age limit for healthy people. All donors must be in good health and weigh at least 110 pounds.

Medicare workshop

HOLLISTER – A Medicare 2009 workshop is set to take place Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 6:30 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 7290 Airline Hwy., Tres Pinos.

Medicare health plans, how to change plans and how to enroll in prescription programs will be covered.

The moderator will be Sally NeSmith of the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program.

Help feed others

HOLLISTER – The Union Four-H Club is challenging all San Benito County Four-H clubs to contribute to a food drive supporting Community Pantry during the Holiday season. Beginning today and until Nov. 20, Four-H members are asked to gather food and bring it to the Community Pantry at 1133 San Felipe Road. The Pantry will keep track of contributions from each club, and the winning club will be recognized at the Four-H holiday dinner.
