fund-raiser for the library at the town’s VFW Sept. 15. Proceeds
from the fund-raiser will be used to purchase new books, upgrade
computer equipment and for other library needs.
Library auxiliary BBQ a success
SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – The San Juan Bautista Library Auxiliary hosted its 17th annual fund-raiser for the library at the town’s VFW Sept. 15. Proceeds from the fund-raiser will be used to purchase new books, upgrade computer equipment and for other library needs.
Girl Scout Troop #3473 volunteered and helped with the preparation of the chicken barbecue. Several Anzar students also helped with the event. The group raffled off eight donated gift baskets and gave out free barbecue tickets to merchants who have contributed to the event in the past.
“It was our opportunity to give back to those merchants who supported us in past years,” said Mary Genesy, the Auxiliary president.
San Juan soccer club fund-raiser
SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – The San Juan Soccer Club is holding a barbecue fund-raiser Sat., Oct. 13 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the VFW Hall in San Juan. Tickets are $10 per preson and the event will include a raffle, a silent auction and entertainment. The babercue dinner includes tri-tip, beans, salad, bread and drinks.

First 5 San Benito invites input
HOLLISTER – The First 5 San Benito Children and Families Commission is inviting parents, childcare providers, educators, medical profressionals and child advocates to attend an important meeting to help develop programs and services that meet the needs of local children ages 0 to 5. The feedback will be important in shaping the 2008-2009 strategic plan.

SBHS Senior Class holding fund-raiser
HOLLISTER – San Benito High School’s Senior Class of 2008 is holding a fund-raiser with help from Running Rooster restaurant to pay for materials and the cost of the Winter Ball. During Oct. 12-20, mention SBHS or Senior Class and Running Rooster will donate a percentage of the bill to the senior class.
October is Disabilities Awareness Month
GILROY – The Gavilan College Disability Resource Center will hold a series of events throughout the month of October, which is designated as Disabilities Awareness Month. Events include a display of “did you know” facts in the Gavilan College student center, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., from Oct. 16-18, movie days Oct. 23-24 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and noon to 2 p.m. in the student center, and an interactive activity on Tuesday, Oct. 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the student center.

Free breast reconstruction DVD
MONTEREY – October is National Brest Cancer Awareness Month. Monterey plastic and reconstructive surgeon David T. Morwood has produced an educational DVD, “Breast Reconstruction-Know Your options: A Guide for the Woman with Breast Cancer.”
The DVD explores and explains the major issues in breast reconstruction, while helping women understand that the diagnosis of breast cancer does not necessarily mean the loss of their breast. Through the individual interviews and narrative, valuable information on breast reconstruction is presented, including all the latest surgical options, and more than 100 before and after pictures.

Passports, anyone?
HOLLISTER – The Hollister Post Office will be the scene for a Passport Fair on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The post office is located at 100 Maple St.
People who wish to apply for passports should have a completed passport application (available at the fair or at 222.travel.state.gov), proof of citizenship, proof of identity/original birth certificate, two identical passport photos (which can be obtained at the fair), and passport and photo fees. Applicants under 14 mush have both parents present.
Fees for applicants 16 and older are $97, 15 and younger are $82.
To expedite processing, additional fees are charged.
Literacy tutor appreciation night
HOLLISTER – Volunteers in the Literacy Tutor program at the San Benito County Free Library will be recognized during a Tutor Appreciation Night on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. at the library, 470 Fifth St. Diane Leverich, adult literacy coordinator, and Stephanie Lane, literacy aide, will host the get-together and present a short program on tutoring resources and a general discussion on what is and isn’t working within the program. bake sale
HOLLISTER – Social Vocational Services of Hollister, a non-profit organization serving adults of all ages with developmental disabilities in both community and facility settings, will host a bake sale on Monday, Oct. 22 beginning at 10 a.m. in the Save-Mart parking lot. All proceeds will benefit the agency’s local clients. Anyone who would like to make a donation or donate baked goods should call Gail Hernandez at 794-5161.

Local distiller wins gold for tequila
HOLLISTER – Local distiller Frank Leal earned three awards for his line of tequila, Tequila 5150, at the 5th annual Spirits of Mexico Tequila Competition in San Diego. Industry professionals judged sixty-one Tequila and Mezcal entries. Leal’s Blanco and Anejo both received gold medals, and the Reposado earned silver. The competition was held Sept. 13 at the Hacienda Hotel in San Diego.
Tequila 5150 is the creation of Frank Leal, winemaker and owner of Leal Vineyards, which he started when he was 28. Taking his experience as a winemaker, Leal uses some of the same non-traditional techniques to produce his tequila.
New symphony series set
HOLLISTER – The Hollister Symphony Group this week announced a new “Tag-Along Series” for 2007-2008. The Symphony group is offering four bus trips to San Francisco for those wishing to have lunch, go shopping, visit a museum or attend the symphony, purchasing tickets that day.
This is an easy way to spend the day in San Francisco without concerns about driving or parking.
The bus leaves Dunne Park at 8:30 a.m., arriving at the St. Francis Hotel on Union Square at about 10:30 a.m. The return trip departs Davies Symphony Hall at about 4 p.m., arriving back at Dunne Park at approximately 6:30 p.m. Trips are all on Thursday: Nov. 29, Jan. 29, Feb. 28 and March 27.

Free flu vaccine
HOLLISTER – Free FluMist flu vaccinations will be available for healthy people between the ages of 2 and 49 on Nov. 1 from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Veteran’s Memorial building,649 San Benito St. FluMist is not a shot; it is a fine spray in each nostril. The vaccination is not for pregnant women, children on aspirin therapy, or for people who have chronic conditions such as diabetes and asthma. It is offered by the San Benito County Health & Human Services Agency, Public Health Services.
