Hunger fighters to be honored

HOLLISTER – Many San Benito County organizations and individuals who helped collect over 80,300 pounds of food and cash equivalent during the 2006 Second Holiday Food Drives were honored at the Annual Awards and Hunger Fighter of the Year Reception on Thursday, March 29, from 5:30 to 7:30pm at Jardines de San Juan in San Juan Bautista.  Hosted by the 2006 Holiday Food Drive Co-chairs Tracie Cone, former publisher of The Pinnacle, and Michele Stephenson, board secretary of Community Pantry, and DMB El Rancho San Benito, the ceremony included awards to groups and individuals whose generous donations feed the hungry in Santa Benito County.  City, state and federal officials will also be recognizing the Hunger Fighter of the year with government proclamations.

The San Benito Hunger Fighter of the Year Award was presented to Paul Armbruster who has been fighting hunger in San Benito County for eight years as the manager of Fishes and Loaves.  Last year alone, Loaves and Fishes fed 915 families (3,350 individuals).  Armbruster takes pride in purchasing most of the 22 food items available at the pantry including quality brand name chicken, soup, flour, orange juice, peanut butter and fresh eggs.  His passion for helping the poor and disadvantaged has brought many people together to help feed the hungry.  His efforts reflect the mission of Second Harvest Food Bank- “to educate and involve individuals to end hunger and alleviate malnutrition in our communities.”

Some of the winners in the annual competition to collect food for Second Harvest Food Bank in the 2006 San Benito Holiday Food Drive are DMB: El Rancho San Benito, Main Street Media, County of San Benito, San Benito High School and the Hollister Exchange Club.
