Mosquito abatement vote closing
HOLLISTER – Property owners in northern and central San Benito County have until Tuesday, June 26, to cast ballots over creation of a mosquito abatement district locally.
County Agricultural Commissioner Paul Matulich said this week that his office already has received a nearly 30 percent response rate.
Any registered voter who has lost a ballot, or changed his or her mind on the issue, can pick up a ballot at the Ag office at 3220 Southside Road.
In cases where property is owned jointly, two or more people at the same address may vote, Matulich said. “Of course, that means they may cancel each others’ vote out,” he added.
The measure would assess property owners through increased property taxes to fund a control program for mosquitoes. The parasitic insects are linked to a variety of diseases, including West Nile virus.
Emmaus House receives a grant
HOLLISTER – Emmaus House, a San Benito shelter for women and children who are victims of domestic violence, received a $5,000 grant from Capital Network and a $5,000 grant from the Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System’s Children’s Miracle Network.
Capital Network is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that raises funds for charities that serve the needs of women and children in California. Assemblymember Anna Caballero helped in obtaining the grant.
The Children’s Miracle Network grant will support recreational and study areas at the shelter. The Capital Network grant will help provide programs and services to survivors of domestic violence in San Benito County.
Senate passes bill banning trans fats
SACRAMENTO – A California senate bill authored by Senator Elaine K. Alquist has been approved. Senate Bill 490 will require schools to remove all foods containing trans fatty acids from their vending machines and competitive food service.
“Trans fats increase a product’s shelf life, but decrease our human shelf life,” Alquist said. “Given the health costs and consequences of poor food choices and options, how can we afford not to ban trans fats?”
Medical research has shown that trans fats are harmful to humans. Among the threats are increased risks of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and lowered immune response.
