Let’s go to the hop

HOLLISTER – Celebrate the 1960s with the San Benito High School Class of 1966.

All Haybaler alumni and grammar school classmates are welcome to attend the celebration from 7 p.m. to midnight on Aug. 2 at Ridgemark Tennis Club. Cost for the dinner-dance is $50. Cheer golf challenge

HOLLISTER – The 2008 Haybaler Cheer Golf Challenge is set for Aug. 22 at San Juan Oaks Golf Club.

Cost for the benefit scrambles tournament is $500 per foursome or $135 for individual golfers. Entry covers greens fees, a cart, a goodie bag and dinner.

Tee off is 1 p.m. with dinner and a live auction at 6:30.

Sponsorships also are available at $200 per green and auction donations are also being solicited.

GOP to meet

HOLLISTER – The August meeting of the San Benito County Republican Party will be Thursday, Aug.8. The location will be the Pacific Coast Bank Community Room, 260 Tres Pinos Road, Hollister, across Rancho Drive from San Benito Bank.

People for Peace

HOLLISTER – Hollister People for Peace, a local discussion group, will meet Wednesday, July 23, from 7-9 p.m. in the Barbara Room of the San Benito County Free Library, 470 Fifth St. Possible topics include the continuation of the Iraq war, rising gas prices or using tax money to fund the war instead of necessary programs at home. This meeting is open to the public.

25 project brings detours

HOLLISTER – A series of detours will route traffic around Airline Highway and Sunnyslope Road as part of the Highway 25 bypass project starting July 21.

The detours will remain in effect until Aug. 19.

The project is currently on schedule for a fall opening.

MBARI open house

MONTEREY – The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute staff are hosting a free open house Saturday, July 19 from noon to 5 p.m. It will feature science and technology exhibits, displays of deep-sea video from Monterey Bay, research presentations, children’s activities, ocean career information and much more. MBARI staff, scientists, and engineers will share their excitement about the institute’s work.

Visitors can view MBARI’s robotic deep-sea vehicles: our remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) Ventana and Tiburon; our autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs); and our Benthic Rover-distant cousin to the Mars rovers. MBARI’s three research vessels will also be at the dock with related displays. The Monterey Bay Aquarium will provide conservation information and selected gift store items.
