HOLLISTER- California Regional Water Resources Control Board
staff is recommending that board members lift the cease and desist
order on new sewer hookups in Hollister at its Dec. 5 board
meeting, according to documents from the Water Resources Control
Board. The cease and desist order has accomplished its purpose and
is no longer necessary, according to the documents.
Anna Caballero honored

SACRAMENTO – Assemblywoman Anna Caballero will be honored by the Civil Justice Association of California with the Civil Justice Leadership Award for her work in the 2007-2008 legislative session, at a luncheon set for a date to be announced.

During the session Caballero supported bills that protect businesses or individuals who volunteer to help in an emergency; authorize additional judges in California and increase access for people with disabilities while reducing excessive litigation against businesses.

“Anna Caballero’s constituents and all Californians are lucky to have an assemblywoman with enthusiasm, courage and common sense working for them in Sacramento to support the interests of citizens, consumers, businesses and good Samaritans, and ease the burden on our courts,” said John H. Sullivan, CJAC’s president.

SBHS hosts Back-to-School Night

HOLLISTER – San Benito High School will hold its annual Back-to-School Night for all parents of high school students Wednesday, Sept. 17 beginning at 6:15 p.m. The program will begin with a Student Support Team meeting, where parents will have the opportunity to meet the school’s assistant principals, counselors, guidance technicians and support staff. Students are assigned to teams alphabetically by last name.

From 6:45-8 p.m. there will be classroom presentations to review course expectations, grading and attendance policies. During these presentations, parents can make private appointments for a future date and time to speak to teachers about individual students.

The Scarlet Regime Band and Color Guard will provide entertainment, and members of the Spirit Squad and Student Council will serve as guides. Parking lots will be open. A special presentation for Spanish-speaking parents will be held in the school library beginning at 6 p.m.

How to concentrate successfully

HOLLISTER – West Coast Martial Arts will host “The ABCs of Success for Concentration,” a free “Back-to-School Bash” community event for local children Saturday, Sept. 20. The purpose of the event is to help teach children how to stay active and fit, as well as ways they can improve their grades. Public input needed on water/wastewater urban plan

HOLLISTER – Residents of Hollister and the surrounding area are invited to attend a public meeting about a water and wastewater plan that is near completion.

The meeting is Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. at the Veteran’s Memorial Building, 649 San Benito St., room 204. The meeting is the final in a series of meetings that started in November 2005. It will be an opportunity for residents to learn about the master plan. The goal of the master plan is to increase reliability of water supplies both long term and during dry years; reduce salt loading to the basin; improve drinking water and recycled water quality; and coordinate infrastructure improvements for water and wastewater systems.

Give your junk a home

HOLLISTER – A weekend bulky item-recycling event is set for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 27 and 28, at the John Smith Road Landfill east of Hollister.

Qualifying bulky items will be accepted free of charge from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. both days. No miscellaneous items, trash or business waste will be accepted free of charge.

Qualifying items include washers, dryers, treadmills, water heaters, freezers, bookshelves, mattresses, box springs dinette sets, couches and printers. Only two items are allowed per customer. Any household item weighing 25 pounds or more in considered bulky.

Further information about qualifying bulky items is available by calling 636-4110.

To participate, visitors to the landfill must bring a current California driver’s license or I.D. indicating residence inside of San Benito County.

Free Shriner’s clinic for SBC children

HOLLISTER – A free Shriner’s screening clinic for children from birth to 18 years of age will be held at Hazel Hawkins Hospital Saturday, Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Shriner’s Hospital offers no-cost care to children with orthopedic needs, birth defects and burn damage. Annual hoedown supports ‘Hunger’

SALINAS – The Central Coast Young Farmers and Ranchers will host their 5th annual Harvest Dance Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. at Chapin Pines, 440 Crazy Horse Road, in Prunedale. The annual fundraiser will benefit Ag Against Hunger.

The casual, outdoor dinner dance will feature a barbecue dinner, a full bar with local wines and music from the Shan Johnson Band. Tickets are $40 and sponsorships are available.

Want a green thumb?

SAN JOSE – Local residents qualify for a green gardener training program, a 10-week series offered at the Erikson Adult Education Center, 4849 Pearl Ave., San Jose.

The program is designed for landscape maintenance workers, landscape contractors and professional gardeners, and training is conducted in English and Spanish.

HOLLISTER – The Hollister Downtown Association is laying plans for the annual “Lights On Celebration” Saturday, Nov. 29. This year’s parade theme is “All I want for Christmas” and parade applications are now being accepted.

Homebuyer Workshop

HOLLISTER- Seating is still available for a free homebuyer workshop hosted by San Benito County officials. Guest speakers will include experts from Intero Real Estate, Wells Fargo Home Mortgage and Chicago Title Co. The workshop will include topics such as the home buying process from a to z, available down payment and closing cost programs, below market rate housing opportunities, available foreclosed properties in the county and, for qualified county employees, the CalPERS home buying program.
