Volunteers needed for gleaning
HOLLISTER
– Ag Against Hunger (AAH) needs volunteers to help with its
gleaning program on Saturday, June 30. Working with local growers,
volunteers help collect quality, marketable produce that has been
left behind after commercial harvest. The collected food is
transported to food banks and pantries in the
tri-county area.
Volunteers are asked to meet in Salinas at 495 Brunken Ave. by 9
a.m. Including transportation, orientation and the actual
harvesting of crops, volunteers should expect to commit
approximately three hours for the gleaning session. Transportation
can be arranged for volunteers without vehicles.
Members of the community can sign up to participate either
individually or as a group. Call volunteer coordinator Nancy Hunter
at 755-1480.

produce to food banks in San Benito, Monterey and Santa Cruz
counties as well as others throughout the state. Since 1990, area
growers and shippers have donated more than 134 million pounds of
fresh fruit and vegetables.

Anti-gang video wins national award
HOLLISTER – “You Can’t Get There…From Here,” an anti-gang video made by the Leadership San Benito County Class of 2006, has earned a National Hometown Video Award.
The awards are presented by the Alliance for Community Media, a nonprofit national membership organization representing more than 3,000 public, educational and governmental (PEG) access groups and community media centers across the country. Awards are given to creative programs that address community needs, develop community involvement and challenge traditional commercial television formats. Hometown is local cable’s largest video awards.
The video was filmed over a 10-month period, by 30 students participating in the leadership program. The 15-minute video has been used by the San Benito County Sheriff’s Department as part of a gang determent presentation in middle school classrooms.
The award ceremony will take place Thursday, July 26 in Minneapolis, Minn. as part of the Alliance for Community Media’s annual conference. This is the second award for the video, which was also awarded a WAVE award in San Jose last year as part of a six state video contest for PEG stations.
Fourth of July Parade
HOLLISTER – The Annual Kiddie Parade will be held on July 4th beginning at 10:00 am. The Kiddie Parade will begin in the Commuter Parking Lot at Veteran’s Memorial Park on Memorial Drive and continue north on Memorial Drive to Marguerite Maze Middle School. A short program will be held at Marguerite Maze Middle School. Children of all ages are welcome to participate: walk, ride, roller skate, roller blade, etc. All entrants will receive an American flag.
The Kiddie Parade is presented by the 4th of July Celebration Committee and sponsored in part by the City of Hollister and the San Benito County Chamber of Commerce. Fireworks celebration
HOLLISTER – The annual community fireworks display will take place on July 4th at dusk at the field adjacent to Marguerite Maze Middle School. The fireworks are a gift to the public from the 4th of July Celebration Committee and all of the local fireworks booths.
New buses in Santa Clara county
GILROY – The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority has traded in their older, 40-foot buses for smaller more-fuel efficient models. The new buses can hold up to 25 passengers and meet standards set by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The new buses will take over routes in Gilroy, Morgan Hill and Routs 48 and 49 in Los Gatos. The smaller buses will be better able to access residential neighborhoods and developing business districts where the longer buses had trouble maneuvering. Morgan Hill will have two new routes; one will serve the two high schools and Cochrane Plaze and the other will serve the Morgan Hill Caltrain Station and the Centennial Recreation and Senior Center. A route in Gilroy will allow easier access to retail outlets east of Hwy. 101.
The new buses will start ciruclating July 12 and will have a new fare structure. A single fare will be $1 for adults. Youth ages 5-17, seniors 6 and older and disabled or medicare fares will be 50 cents. VTA day, month and annual passes can also be used on the buses.

Farr secures bay funds
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Sam Farr, D-Carmel, this week secured $500,000 to fund a water diversion project in the city of Seaside that is intended to protect water quality in Monterey Bay.
The Monterey Bay Dry Weather Diversion Project will contain urban pollutants and prevent them from running into the bay, according to a statement from Farr’s office. Runoff will be diverted to a nearby treatment plant instead.
“I am proud to have secured money for a project that will benefit every person living near Monterey Bay and the millions of tourists who visit each year,” Farr said.
