Candidate leaves district
PAICINES – David Hopcroft, who appears on the ballot for the Willow Grove School District Board of Trustees, is leaving the district to move to Montana and will be unable to serve on the board.
The decision to move was announced after ballots were printed.
Be prepared for drill
HOLLISTER – San Benito High School staff will participate in a state-mandated safety protocol exercise the week of October 27. Sirens will be activated at some point during the week, and will be audible over a large area surrounding the high school. For more information, contact Antonio Vela at 637-5831.
Laguna burn planned
BITTERWATER – The U.S. Bureau of Land Management announced plans for a controlled burn in the remote Laguna Mountain area of southern San Benito County.
When weather conditions permit, 20 to 60 acres are to be burned, according to BLM.
The burns are conducted to improve wildlife habitat and reduce brush in the area.

Fall Festival comes to Cerra Vista
HOLLISTER – Cerra Vista school is hosting their Fall Festival Oct. 24 from 3:30 p.m. to dusk at 2151 Cerra Vista Dr. The event has a wild West and guests are invited to wear boots, chaps and cowboy hats.
The festival includes activities such as ping pong goldfish, a shooting gallery, pig races, a milk bottle toss and a mechanical bull. There will also be sweets for sale, and raffle tickets.
Calling all nonprofits
HOLLISTER – The San Benito Chamber of Commerce is hosting the second Non-Profit Business Seminar, “How to Pay the Bills” Tuesday, Oct. 28 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Paine’s Restaurant and Bar.
The event will feature three guest speakers who will discuss the importance of marketing and fundrasing for nonprofits. One guest speaker is the chairperson of the Gilroy Garlic Festival.
Cost is $15 a person and heavy appetizers will be served. Space is limited, RSVP to 637-5315.
Cattlewomen fashion show and luncheon

Help keep the Grinch away
HOLLISTER – Small Steps, a nonprofit, community-based organization created to assist disadvantaged children in kindergarten through eighth grade, hopes to buy coats and shoes for 375 local children this year. Donations from the community, including individuals and businesses, make it possible for the needy children to shop for coats and shoes. All donations are used solely for the annual program, which this year will take children on a shopping trip to Target and Payless Shoe Source on Nov. 8. Volunteers are also needed. They must be at least 18 years old and will be checked against the Megan’s Law list. Tax-deductible contributions may be sent to Small Steps, P.O. Box 2137 in Hollister, 95024. Lenny Alvarez Benefit
HOLLISTER – Tickets are still available for the Lenny Alvarez Dinner/Dance Benefit & Silent Auction, which will be held Saturday, Nov. 1 from 6 p.m. to midnight at the Bolado Park Pavilion. Free flu clinic
HOLLISTER – A free flu clinic will be offered from 1:30-7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6 at the Veteran’s Memorial building at 649 San Benito St. FluMist, a fine spray in each nostril, will be given to those who qualify. All others ages 6 months and up, including pregnant women, can receive a flu shot. The event is sponsored by the San Benito County Health and Human Services Agency. HOLLISTER – The San Benito County Arts Council invites all local artists to participate in the annual Open Studios tour.
Open to all local artists working in any media, the event is devoted to promoting local artists and assisting them in marketing their work.
The event this year will be held April 25-26, 2009.

Tax-aide volunteers needed
HOLLISTER – The American Association of Retired Persons, the nation’s largest free volunteer-run tax counseling and preparation service needs volunteers of all ages who want to learn tax law and help prepare tax returns for middle and low-income taxpayers.
Each year from Feb. 1 to April 15 tax-aide volunteers prepare returns at more than 10,000 sites nationwide.
Tax-aide volunteers receive free training from the Internal Revenue Service. Volunteers are asked to give a minimum of 40 hours over the season.

HOLLISTER – The Hollister Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary is looking for craftspeople for its annual holiday craft show Dec. 6.
The show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building. Cost for vendors is $40 for an 8-by-10-foot space. A table and two chairs is available for each space.
