Meet the ‘Banjo-ologist’

HOLLISTER – Gordy Ohliger, who bills himself as the world’s only “banjo-ologist” brings his humorous musical history of America’s unique stringed instrument to the San Benito High School Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 5.

The California Arts Council described Ohliger as “one of America’s finest touring soloists, and he performs internationally.

Tickets are available in advance through the Country Rose Gallery, 722 San Benito St.; the Hollister Downtown Association office, 455 San Benito St.; Postnet, 1760 Airline Hwy.; and Mission Gallery, 106 Third St., San Juan Bautista. Cost for advance tickets is $5. Tickets will also be available at the door for a higher cost.

Info session for CASA

HOLLISTER – Court Appointed Special Advocates of San Benito County staff is looking for volunteers, 21 years and older, to become trained advocates for children in San Benito County. CASA offers comprehensive training to adults willing to advocate for the needs of abused, neglected and abandoned children and speak up for their best interest in the court system. To learn more, attend an info session Thursday, Sept. 4 at 6 p.m. at Starbucks on Airline Hwy. Please contact the CASA office at 637-4992 to rsvp.

GOP leadership meets

HOLLISTER – The September meeting of the San Benito County Republican Party will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at the Pacific Coast Bank Community Room, 260 Tres Pinos Road, across Rancho Drive from the San Benito Bank.

Adult education classes

HOLLISTER – Free evening classes for adults ages 18 and older in Beginning ESL, Beginning/Intermediate ESL, Advanced ESL and an Adult Diploma Program begin at the Nash Road campus of San Benito High School on Sept. 9.

Students can join at anytime. Register by showing up to class. Adult diploma students should bring their most current high school transcript to the first class.

Grab a broom

HOLLISTER – The downtown Hollister fall cleanup campaign resumes on Saturday, Sept. 13 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Local organizations and individuals are invited to put a fresh face on the downtown area in this event, sponsored by the Hollister Downtown Association and Norcal Waste Systems.

Workforce meeting set

HOLLISTER – San Benito County Behavioral Health is holding a workforce education and training program stakeholders meeting on Thursday, Sept. 18, 10 am to noon. The meeting will take place at San Benito County Behavioral Health, 1131 San Felipe Road, Hollister. This meeting is open to all interested participants.

Good ship Hunley anchors at Bolado

HOLLISTER – Civil War Days return to the San Benito County Historical Park, a mile south of Tres Pinos off Hwy. 25, on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 20 and 21.

This year’s event features a replica of the L. Hunley, a Confederate submersible that was the first submarine to sink a warship.

Historical re-enactors will stage mock battles at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, 3 pm. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Living history demonstrations will continue throughout both days.

Admission is $5 per person, with children under 10 free. Parking is an additional $3 per car. The event is sponsored by the San Benito County Historical Society and the National Civil War Association.

Algebra textbooks

HOLLISTER- For the first time since 2001, educators are evaluating new K-8 math textbooks to prepare students to meet a new state mandate that all eighth graders take Algebra I by the 2010-11 school year. Local teachers and school administrators have begun the assessment process. The complete list of math titles is available online at www.cde.ca.gov. Parents can contact their children’s school to offer input during the process.

One of the available textbooks approved by the state was developed by the UCLA math department, “Introduction to Algebra,” and is intended for eighth graders. In addition “Standards Edition,” a book developed by Marshall Cavendish International and based on math curriculum in Singapore is also approved by the state.
