Speaker visits MS Group

HOLLISTER –Dr. William Brandon will discuss alternative treatments for multiple sclerosis on May 27 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Gil Gallery at Hazel Hawkins Hospital.

Library friends fundraiser

HOLLISTER – Friends of the San Benito County Library win when people order food from the Running Rooster Monday, May 19 through Saturday, May 24.

Running Rooster will donate a portion of every sale if diners ask to donate a portion of their meal receipts to help stock the local bookmobile.

The restaurant is located at 800 San Benito St.

Golf boosters meeting

HOLLISTER – The Lady Baler Golf Boosters will hold an information meeting for players and parents on Wednesday, May 21, at 7 p.m. at Ridgemark Golf Course.

Topics will include a review of last year’s golf tournament, and the date and agenda for this year’s tournament as well as the upcoming golf season.

Incoming freshman girls and returning players are encouraged to attend.

Veterans’ activities planned

HOLLISTER – Local veterans’ groups will perform services for fallen comrades on Monday, May 26. Services start at 9 a.m. at the San Juan Cemetery, followed by rites at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Hollister at 10 a.m. and Calvary Cemetery at 11 a.m.

The groups will finish at Veterans Memorial Building, followed by a chicken barbecue lunch.

Mental Health awareness month

HOLLISTER – The San Benito County Behavioral Health Department staff is sponsoring a few events for Mental Health Awareness Month.

The first event is Friday, May 16 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Esperanza Center on Fifth Street. Youth ages 16 to 19 are invited to listen to music by local bands and watch a film about a person struggling with depression.

On Thursday, May 22, homeless residents are invited to Esperanza Center for food, karaoke and other fun activities from 5 to 7 p.m.

All residents are invited Wednesday, May 28 to an Open House at Esperanza Center from noon to 5 p.m. where the stories and struggles of local residents will be highlighted.

Monthly antique fair

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – A monthly antique fair will be held the third Saturday of every month from May through October from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mariposa Street.

The dates include May 17, June 21, July 19, Aug. 16, Sept. 20 and Oct. 18.

Wine train comes to Santa Cruz

FELTON – The Santa Cruz Mountain Winegrowers association is offering a wine train and auction Sunday, May 18 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Roaring Camp Railroads, off Graham Hill Road.

The cost is $55 in advance, $65 at the door and $20 for children. Guest will enjoy wines from the Santa Cruz Mountain appellation as they ride.

In addition the association will be hosting a Vintner’s Festival on May 31 and June 1 on the Western side of the mountains and June 8 and 9 on the Eastern side of the mounts. Cost is $30 in advance and $35 at the door.

Work permits available

HOLLISTER – Students between the ages of 12 and 18 who are planning to work this summer are encouraged to fill out applications for permits before the school year ends. Students 12 to 18 are required by California Labor Code to have a “permit to employ or work” on file with their employer. Students must apply for work permits at the school they attend.

Each school has authorized personnel who approve applications and process work permits. Students under 14 years of age are only allowed to work in agriculture-related businesses or in entertainment. Applications for work permits for students attending rural schools can be obtained from the school principal.

Employers who employ students without work permits on file face potential fins of $100 to $500 plus possible imprisonment.

Learn about color guard

HOLLISTER – Eighth-grade students and anyone else who’s interested are invited to a San Benito High School Color Guard social and barbecue on Friday, May 30 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the San Benito High School band room., 1221 Monterey St.

Activities include a color guard demonstration, a chance to try out color guard equipment and a chance to socialize with members of color guard.

SAN MARTIN – The South County Animal Shelter in San Martin is looking for donations of kitty litter due to budget restrictions. They use a brand called “Yesterday’s News” that is easy good for use in small cage environments. Clay and scoop litter can cause respiratory problems in small enclosures. BLM sets fire restrictions

HOLLISTER – The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is placing fire restrictions on public land managed by the Hollister Field Office. No vehicles, campfires or open flames will be allowed on BLM lands in the Panoche, Griswold, Tumey and Ciervo Hills, effective immediately.

Smoking is allowed only in enclosed vehicles or while stopped or standing in an area cleared of flammable materials.

Saddle Horse Parade coming

HOLLISTER – The Saddle Horse Parade returns to downtown Hollister on June 26. Entry forms for the parade are available at the San Benito County Chamber of Commerce office, 650 San Benito St., Suite 130.

Entry fees are $30 per single entry or vehicle and $50 for two. Public safety organizations and school marching bands will be admitted free.

The number of parade entries is limited and determined on a first-come, first-served basis. Entries are due no later than 5 p.m. Friday, June 6. Further information is available by calling 637-5315.
