St. Francis marks anniversary

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – St. Francis Retreat and Renewal Center begins its 61st year of service.

In 1947, at the suggestion of Jack Haley, the Tin Man in “The Wizard of Oz,” the Franciscan friars bought the San Justo ranch house and 73 acres near San Juan and launched repairs and renovations in preparation for their first retreat in February 1948.

The retreat center grew over time, but suffered a devastating blow in 2006 when a fire swept through the 140-year-old house that was the center’s headquarters. The center quickly re-opened, and plans were laid for new facilities.

A capital campaign for $5.5 million is nearing completion, with $1.4 million needed to complete the project.

As part of the retreat’s celebration of its past and its future plans, an anniversary Mass and banquet are planned for Jan. 20. The public is invited. Those planning to attend should call the retreat at 623-4234 or e-mail
