Kelsey Jeffries could sluff off last Friday night’s loss to Jo Jo Wyman in San Jose fairly easily.
“It wasn’t a title fight,” said Jeffries. “I would never give up my title. No way.”
Jeffries, a resident of Hollister, dropped an eight-round decision to Wyman with one scorer calling it a draw and the two others giving Wyman the nod. The result was as much a surprise to Wyman, as it was to Jeffries (20-8).
“I talked with Jo Jo a long time after the fight and she told me that I won it,” said Jeffries. “She said she thought she won the last time we fought when I beat her in April. And, yeah, that was a close fight. This fight, I was schooling her for the first five rounds, then I took it to her the last three rounds. The judges wanted a war, but I didn’t want to war with her.”
Jeffries’ corner man, Bobby Lee of Las Vegas, and the producer of the fight, Rick Mello, also thought Jeffries had won the fight.
“They told me I could have been more busy in the beginning,” said Jeffries. “I was dodging punches in the first couple of rounds. I wanted to wear her out so I could finish her in the later rounds. I had three goals before the fight: one, I didn’t want to get hit and I didn’t; two, I didn’t want to get cut and I didn’t; three, I wanted to have energy left for my July 10 fight.”
When Jeffries (who had beaten Wyman three times previously) defeated Wyman in Yakima, Washington in April, Wyman head-butted Jeffries, causing a cut above the eye.
Jeffries is scheduled to return to her favorite venue – HP Pavilion – when she takes part in another Miller Light Fight Night at the Tank on July 10. Her opponent is yet to be named. This will not be a title bout.
“This last fight motivated me for the next fight,” said Jeffries. “This next fight will have more money involved. I’m going to fight differently and go for it earlier.”
Jeffries has just acquired her EMT license and begins Fire Academy in Hollister July 3.
