Residents from 16 to 23 are encouraged to attend a youth employment fair Thursday where over 40 local employers will be on hand to accept applications and hold interviews.

The fair, at the corner of Fourth and San Benito streets from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m., will feature employers including Premiere Cinemas, Milgard Windows, the California Highway Patrol, the Hollister Fire Department, Target and Bonfante Gardens. Also, recruiters from the U.S. Air Force, Coast Guard and Navy will answer questions.

“It’s a great opportunity for youth,” said Shelley Donati, coordinator of the School-to-Career program. “There will be people hiring together in one location and people to help there as well.”

The San Benito County One-Stop Career Center will have a booth to assist people with filling out applications, Donati said.

Participants are advised to wear business attire since interviews may take place at the event. Donati also advised people to bring their Social Security number, identification, resume and references.

This is the fair’s second year. Last year, about 300 youth attended, Donati said – a number she’s hoping for again.

“We’re trying to accommodate employers and students. It’s after school and open late enough for kids to go after sports practice,” she said. “At this point, I’m just praying for no rain.”

The fair is beneficial for youth because it brings everything together in one place, Donati said.

“This is the time kids are out looking for a summer job,” she said. “A lot of them don’t know where to start looking or what’s available.”

The event is sponsored by nine organizations, including San Benito County School to Career, the Youth Employment Opportunity Program, the One-Stop Career Center and the county Office of Education.
