costs, the Hollister City Council recently voted to appoint
incumbent city treasurer Geri Johnson to a four-year term after no
other candidates submitted their names for the November ballot.
In a move that could save up to $40,000 in potential election costs, the Hollister City Council recently voted to appoint incumbent city treasurer Geri Johnson to a four-year term after no other candidates submitted their names for the November ballot.
Johnson, who also serves as the appointed city clerk, has held the treasurer’s position for the past six years. Her clerk’s duties include keeping records of all council meetings, managing elections and updating the municipal code.
With the council’s action, Johnson’s term as treasurer – which includes a $200 monthly stipend – will run through December 2014.
“I didn’t want the city to have to pay for the cost of an election,” Johnson said, noting that if she had been the only candidate to apply for the job the council could have still appointed her and avoided the cost of a city-wide election. The filing period for elected city office was July 12 through Aug. 11.
The city is conducting an election for the District 2 and 3 city council positions in November, meaning there are no city-wide seats or other measures on the upcoming ballot.
