Former Pinnacle reporter Kate Woods remained in critical condition as of press time Wednesday following a single-car accident Saturday on Panoche Road, according to a spokeswoman with Regional Medical Center of San Jose.

The 52-year-old Paicines resident was airlifted from the scene, at Panoche and Recaldi roads, after being found by the California Highway Patrol unconscious on the roadside.

At about 11:30 p.m., Woods drove a 1995 Mazda Miata off the road. The vehicle turned over, and she was ejected from the car, according to the CHP.

When authorities arrived, she was unconscious and had sustained unknown external injuries, according to the CHP. She had been in critical condition until at least 2 p.m. Wednesday when the hospital spokeswoman confirmed her listed status.

It’s unclear at this point whether drugs or alcohol were involved, and the case remains under investigation, according to the CHP.

As a reporter for the Pinnacle for many years, Woods was known for her coverage of local government and a weekly column called “Report from the Badlands.”
