Our first Red Phone caller, a local woman, asked the Crimson Crusader what the city will be doing this year to crack down on illegal fireworks. That, dearest caller, is a great question.

The Crimson Crusader called up Hollister Code Enforcement Officer Mike Chambless to find out what is being done to prevent Hollister from turning into a war zone during the Fourth of July weekend. Chambless told our hero that he is already busy working on fireworks enforcement. Illegal fireworks, he said, will be confiscated.

Those who choose to celebrate the 231st anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence with illegal fireworks should be prepared to face stiff fines, Chambless said. Any firework that goes in the air is considered illegal, Chambless said.

Weeds, Be Gone

Our next Red Phone caller, a Hollister woman, asked the Crimson Crusader to get something done about the weeds on Westside Boulevard in Hollister. Our caller reported the weeds might be a fire hazard during the dry summer months.

Well, dearest caller, someone at the Hollister Fire Department is apparently reading your mind. The weeds were cut down earlier this week by weed abatement crews, Hollister Fire Capt. Mike O’Connor said. So there you have it; this problem has been solved.

Rally Road Closures

Our next Red Phone caller, a Hollister man, asked the Crimson Crusader for some information on street closures during the Hollister Motorcycle Rally July 6-8.

The Crimson Crusader called Hollister Police Capt. Bob Brooks to get the skinny on street closures. Brooks said downtown streets, including San Benito Street, Fifth Street between Monterey and East Street, and Sixth Street will be closed starting at 5pm Thursday to prepare for the rally. Cars left on the street past 5pm will be towed at the owner’s expense, Brooks said.
