Snow is in the forecast for Hollister on Saturday. But it’s not coming from above.

This snow will be shipped from Salinas for the annual Hollister Kiwanis Club’s Snow Day Feb. 22 at Dunne Park. The event will last from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Hollister Downtown Association sponsored Snow Day for five years before the Kiwanis Club began organizing it. Bob Baumgartner of the Kiwanis Club said Snow Day has had low turnouts in previous years, about 200 to 300 people, but he said the club doesn’t want too many people because of safety concerns.

“When they (HDA) decided to give it up, we said, ‘Hey, let’s grab it,'” Baumgartner said.

Two truckloads of snow – about 80,000 pounds – will be brought in from Salinas Growers Ice, Baumgartner said. The Kiwanis will shape the snow into a small mountain with a track for kids to ride down on saucers, which will be provided.

“It’s great for the kids,” Baumgartner said.

He said he expects about 200 to 300 residents at the event.

The Kiwanis Club – which is sponsoring the event along with San Benito Bank, South Valley National Bank and the Free Lance – will also bring its hot dog wagon with refreshments. Members of San Benito High School’s Key Club will be on hand to interact with the children in the snow and the Hollister Fire Department will do training exercises and wash away the snow at the end of the event.
