Demolition work is continuing at the former GAF Leatherback property along McCray Street and Prospect Avenue, a process that is expected to be complete in fewer than nine months.
“Some of the demo has been completed on buildings at the northwest end of the property and they are getting ready to start on the demo of the office building in the northeast portion,” said Renee Perales, project coordinator for the Hollister Redevelopment Agency.
Pantano Demolition of Manteca is handling the job for $234,000.
The company and its subcontractors will remove dilapidated structures and equipment from the former site of the roofing materials manufacturer and leave the site ready for re-use.
City officials said Pantano’s bid was relatively low – the high bid was more than $1.2 million – because the firm expects to make money salvaging and recycling equipment and materials from the property.
“There is a lot of salvageable material out there and they have buyers for much of the equipment,” Perales said. “Even some of the wooden structures have been salvaged, which is why we got such a good deal.”
The demolition at the city-owned site will clear the land for potential uses such as housing, retail development or a mix of the two.
Perales said further discussions about uses for the site will start up again soon, with so-called requests for proposals going out to developers to get ideas for uses of the site.
“It’s scheduled as a nine-month project, but we don’t anticipate it taking a full nine months,” Perales said. “They are moving pretty fast.”
