The bitter battle that turned San Benito County into a virtual war zone is over and Measure G will not go into law.
We are glad that it has been defeated for the many reasons previously cited.
The Free Lance did not take a neutral position because we felt strongly that Measure G was a bad idea. It was that simple.
We loathed the efforts of Rebecca McGovern and Earthjustice to knock this vote of the people off the ballot and said so time after time with conviction.
As the county’s daily newspaper and its biggest forum, it was not our job to play politics with such an important issue.
But this is certainly not a time to gloat or even celebrate. There was much good intention and a lot of positive work on the pro Measure G side.
We salute those who truly felt that this law would help make our county a better one for future generations.
Certainly there were lessons learned. Don’t try to circumvent a vote of the people. Outside money and wayward causes should not overcome those who live here.
The County Board of Supervisors must now realize that selfish interests and hidden agendas cannot defeat the righteous efforts of those who would have been hurt by this measure.
The No on G campaign and its many supporters were a great example of grassroots involvement that worked. We salute their dedication, hard work and drive.
But now it is time to put aside the bitterness and to work together. Those who truly care about the future of San Benito County – from both sides of what we hope will be a fleeting divide – have to combine effort and expertise.
Let’s go back to the Best Possible Outcomes that were expressed and hoped for in the initial growth workshops.
Let’s dictate what is right and what we want to our elected county officials, not the other way around. If they don’t follow the course we the people set, vote them out and bring in folks who will.
Let’s now start the true fight as one army marching toward keeping San Benito County a great place to live, work and raise a family – within its beauty, safety and prosperity.
