Signs Are Everywhere, but What Does His Stand for?
Editor,
Political signs are sprouting up in the tri-county area, and they make for quizzical reading. In Gilroy at the busy First Street and Santa Teresa Boulevard intersection opponents for Assembly, Anna Caballero and Ignacio Velasquez, have posted signs.
Curiously, why is it that Caballero states that she is a “Democrat” running for Assembly, yet Velasquez does not list that he is a “Republican” running for Assembly?
Velasquez’s sign has a conspicuously large, empty white space in the upper, right hand corner that could have easily stated “Republican.” As a former yearbook advisor and professional photographer, I understand the desire to incorporate “white space” into a visual making it appealing to the eye, but why at the minor expense of not stating one’s party affiliation?

Good Sportsmanship, Integrity are Alive and Well in Hollister Youth Soccer League
Editor,
I would really like to commend the Hollister recreation department and Tina Garza in particular for the great job that they do with their youth soccer program.
After your editorial a week ago about the terrible youth-sports incident in the valley, it is important that we give credit to a program that is working. I just completed my third season coaching a city rec team, and the program is great. The parents, coaches, referees, participants and all involved have things in perspective. The men and women who donate their time to coach do a great job, not only teaching the fundamentals of their sport, but modeling what a caring adult should be like.
Parents make tunnels after the games for the kids to run through and the snack list is probably the most important thing in your playbook. The kids play for fun, they play hard, and make friendships that go beyond the field. The officials are often junior high or high school kids who also serve as role models for the younger kids.
And last, Tina and her staff go above and beyond the call of duty to make the schedule work, bring uniforms out to practices, allow kids to come out late, and keep the program alive. It truly is a great program, and I hope we as a community do all we can to support it.
