See’s Candies hits my wife’s chocolate sweet spot, but for golfers the sweet spot has nothing to do with chocolate. On the golf course, a golfer’s sweet spot refers to the best place to hit a ball with the putter. To be successful on the golf course, golfers need to use the putter’s sweet spot to shoot more accurate putts.

Lining this up should be easy because most putters have a line or dot of some kind on top of the clubhead to mark where the sweet spot is. But these markings are not always accurate.

The best way to test for a putter’s sweet spot is simple. First hold the putter lightly at the top of the grip with your thumb and forefinger. Then tap the clubhead of the putter with your other hand.

If the club twists, you missed the sweet spot. Keep tapping different locations on the putter until it moves straight back and forth. Once it moves smoothly, you’ve found the club’s sweet spot. Once you do that, check to see if the club’s marking match with the true sweet spot.

If it doesn’t, mark your putter to remember where to strike the ball on the putter. This will allow you to putt better and smoother.

When you were striking the ball off the club’s sweet spot, the putter would twist and impact the ball’s correct line to the hole.

If you need help finding your putter’s sweet spot ask one of our local LPGA or PGA golf professionals.

Hey Pro, Fix Yourself

Occasionally I am asked if I use my own tips. The answer is yes. The tips I provide in this column are used in lessons and on the golf course when I play.

Recently, I struggled with lining up my tee shots and putts, causing me to have some trouble on the course.

So I went back to a tip that I use all the time: Using the name on my golf ball to line up the direction of tee shots and putts.

Not only has it worked and fixed my problems, but I don’t know why I stopped using this the tip in the fist place.
