Workers at West Coast Linens have paychecks in their hands, but they might not be worth anything until Friday. When employees of the laundering service company of 8190 Murray Ave. went to cash their checks today at Bank of America and another bank, bank employees said there were no funds to pay them with.

West Coast Linens’ parent company, Sausalito-based Lohrey Enterprises Inc., filed for bankruptcy Oct. 17, according to records from the United States Bankruptcy Court.

“They give you the check but they don’t have no money in the bank,” said Leticia Mendez, an employee of the company. Two other employees said they were told not to cash their checks until Friday.

The company issued checks without sufficient funds to support them at least 20 times from 2005 to July 2008, said Julio Cesar Viveros, who was an employee during that time period. One employee who would not give her name for fear of retribution said the workers were all told about the company’s bankruptcy at a meeting Monday.

“We have made a number of calls to them and not heard anything ourselves,” said Larry Cope, president and CEO of the Gilroy Economic Development Corporation, adding that the corporation aims to support any Gilroy businesses in the event of problems.

Calls placed to Lohrey Enterprises were forwarded to attorney Robert Fallon, who refused comment.
