The Hollister Lions Club is inviting residents to come out and put their best foot forward at the seventh annual Earthquake Country Bike Ride June 7.

“This is a community service,” Lions’ President-elect Rudy Shippley said. “All the money we make off of this goes to help the community.”

Proceeds from the event help pay for everything from providing hearing aids and glasses for the elderly, youths and the needy to supporting the Ronald McDonald House.

“We’d like the public to come out and join us,” Shippley said.

The bike ride, which starts at Bolado Park, is divided into four routes – a 100-mile ride a 100-kilometer (62-mile) ride, a 40-mile route and a less-demanding 20-mile family ride.

Registration is $30 per person or $50 per family. The fee entitles riders to pre-ride snacks and juice or water and use of rest stops set up all along the routes. The rest stops will also be stocked with water, juice and something for riders to snack on.

At the end of the ride, participants will receive a hearty meal. There will also be meals available for non-riding family members.

“This year, we’ve added something extra for family members who want to come out and support a rider but may not want to ride themselves,” Shippley said. Those extra events include a bike rodeo, jump houses, slip-and-slides and a barbecue.

“There will also be face painting and an interactive exhibit from the Tech Museum in San Jose,” said Allen Ritter, a charter member of the Hollister Lions Club.

The bike ride draws in as many as 700 riders from across the region.

Shippley and Ritter said the ride would not be possible without the help of a number of generous local businesses, which donated many of the items that will be used at the stops and at the starting point in Bolado Park.

“Safeway has been wonderful to us, donating food and drink,” Shippley said. “Pure Water is donating the water. We expect to go through about 1,000 gallons of water.”

The ride starts at 7 a.m. on June 7. For more information or to register, call (831) 628-3010.
