Teen self-help programs begin
HOLLISTER – Reto Juvenil (Challenges of Youth), a free educational program for teens ages 13 and over, will be held Monday, June 16 through Thursday, June 19 from 5-10 p.m. at ABLC Ministries, 153 Fifth St. Topics will include self-identity, anger management, grief and loss and other related topics. Drop Zone opens
HOLLISTER – Leadership San Benito and the Hollister Youth Alliance will host the opening night of the Drop Zone, a center for kids ages 11 to 14. The center will be open every Thursday, starting June 19, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Hollister Community Center, 300 West St. Participation is free. Sacred Heart holds book fair
GILROY – Sacred Heart Parish School will hold a book fair at Barnes and Noble Booksellers in Gilroy this weekend, June 13-15. Customers may purchase books for the school during this event. A copy of the Sacred Heart reading/writing program will be available at the store for those interested in participating.
Teen dances set for June
HOLLISTER – Summer dances for local teens will be hosted this month by the San Benito County Behavioral Services’ Substance Abuse Prevention program. The first, a Hollywood themed dance for high school students called “Hollywood Nights,” will be held Friday, June 20 from 6-9 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building on San Benito Street. The dance will feature a red carpet and local deejay Sergio Flores.
The second dance, “Summer in Hawaii,” is for middle school students and will be held Friday, June 27 at the Community Center on West Street. Students attending either dance will be required to present a student identification card and a dress code will be enforced (no jeans, sneakers, bare midriffs or gang attire are allowed). A $5 admission fee will be charged per student, which will go to support Friday Night Live events at San Benito High School, Rancho San Justo and Marguerite Maze Middle schools throughout the year. Garage sale set at Trinity Lutheran
HOLLISTER – Trinity Lutheran Church of Hollister will hold a summer garage sale Saturday, June 21 from 7-11:30 a.m. at the church, 2300 Airline Hwy. Approximate 10 ft. by 20 ft. spaces are available for rent for a fee of $15 for one space or two spaces for $25. A non-refundable deposit is required. Pet Friends continues spay/neuter programs
HOLLISTER – An anonymous donation has allowed Pet Friends of Hollister to continue its local spay/neuter program. Discount coupons are now available in the amount of $20 or $35 to spay/neuter a cat, or $40 to alter a dog. A $30 coupon is also available for those caregivers who are involved with a trap-neuter-return to help with the cost of spaying or neutering feral cats. Anyone interested in receiving a coupon or seeking additional information should call the Pet Friends message line at 634-1191 and leave a name and telephone number so a volunteer can return the call.

Time for ‘Wine and Whiskers’ benefit
LOS GATOS – Town Cats, a non-profit, no-kill feline adoption center/shelter will host the “Wine and Whiskers” Benefit Fundraiser Sunday, July 13 from 1-5 p.m. at the Los Gatos History Club, 123 Los Gatos Blvd. The event will feature wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres, live music and silent auctions. Local vintners who will have wines available for tasting include Thomas Kruse Winery of Gilroy and Silver Mountain Winery of Santa Cruz.
Tickets are $45 per person or $80 per couple. All of the proceeds from the event will go to the care and feeding of cats and kittens at the shelter, which is located in Morgan Hill. Town Cats serves both Santa Clara and San Benito counties and works to foster home networks for cats and kittens awaiting adoption, educate the public about pet overpopulation and provide the tools to assist with trap-neuter-release programs.
