Disaster centers closing

HOLLISTER – The Small Business Administration announced this week that it is closing its Disaster Loan Outreach Centers in the area.

The centers were opened in the wake of a killing freeze in January, and an office operated out of the local YMCA center on Fifth Street in Hollister.

The office is set to close at 5 p.m. next Thursday, March 22.

When the office closes, completed applications may still be submitted to SBA by mail. For applications and complete information, people may call 800-659-2955. Filing deadline for disaster assistance loans is Oct. 24.

Keep the music playing

HOLLISTER – The current class of Leadership San Benito is launching a campaign to collect musical instruments, supplies and donations to benefit the Hollister School District music program.

Susan Chizek, the only music teacher in the district, works with some 400 students each year. Some students practice without benefit of real instruments, since only 50 are available for lending, and most are in need of repair.

“We’re excited to be doing this for the kids,” said Jodie Marshal, a Leadership class member and campaign chair. “The music program is a fantastic opportunity for the children to learn not only music skills but it also incorporates many other scholastic skills.”

The campaign target is 50 instruments and $2,500 in donations. People wishing to make donations may drop them off at any Hollister School District school, or they may call Chizek at 637-3255 to arrange for an instrument to be picked up.

Monetary donations may be made payable to the Hollister School District Music Program and mailed to the district offices at 2690 Cienega Road, Hollister, CA 95023.
