Hollister – Police arrested a Hollister man on drug and theft charges Friday after he had apparently fallen asleep in an illegally parked car.

Corey Joseph Janic, a 19-year-old Hollister man, was arrested by the Hollister Police Department on possession of controlled substance paraphernalia, a misdemeanor; being under the influence of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor; receiving known stolen property, a felony; and petty theft with a prior theft conviction, a felony, in the 700 block of La Baig Drive at 1:10pm Friday, according to law enforcement officials. Janic was found by the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office and the Hollister Police Department parked illegally and asleep in his car, according to police.

Upon searching the car, law enforcement officers and deputies found a methamphetamine pipe, police said.

Janic was the suspect of a sheriff’s office investigation into a burglary, Sheriff’s Lt. Roy Iler said. Law enforcement officers and deputies found Social Security and credit cards in Janic’s vehicle, Iler said. The items were returned to the owners, Iler said.

Janic is being held at the San Benito County Jail in lieu of $32,000 bail.

SJB Councilmen to Be Sworn in Tonight

San Juan Bautista – The City Council will appoint a new mayor and vice mayor at tonight’s meeting, as well as swearing in three new councilmembers.

Former Mayor Robert Paradice, incumbent Councilwoman Priscilla Hill and public works employee Jeffrey Bagley received the most votes in the council race on Nov. 7. According to City Manager Jan McClintock, Bagley cannot serve as both a councilman and a city employee. McClintock said Bagley must choose between the two roles today.

“He has to decide before he takes the oath,” McClintock said previously. “At that point, he loses his employment.”

McClintock said Monday that Bagley had not yet announced his decision.

The city will also present plaques honoring deceased Mayor Dan Reed and outgoing councilmen Arturo Medina and Chuck Geiger.

In addition to swearing in the new councilmembers, tonight’s agenda includes a public hearing concerning a proposed electronic surveillance system to catch violations at traffic lights. The council will also consider the conceptual plan for Tod duBois’ proposed Muckelemi Street artisan’s plaza and a tobacco ordinance that would, McClintock said, require the city to perform underage tobacco sting operations at least once a year.
