Scholarship for Students Pursuing Medicine Available
Hollister – For students interested in pursuing a career in the medical field, but looking for some extra financial aid, a scholarship is now being offered through Hazel Hawkins Hospital.
Applications are currently available for Hazel Hawkins Hospital’s annual Auxiliary Scholarship. The scholarship is for local students interested in studying medicine. The applications are due April 13.
In order to be eligible, an applicant must be a resident of San Benito County, be a high school graduate and be currently enrolled in a health-related course.
Last year, $20,000 was split between eight award recipients, including six students enrolled at the Gavilan College nursing program.
Applications can be picked up at the Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital Lobby and at San Benito High School and Gavilan College.
Steinbeck Center Museum to Kick Off Big Read! Program
Salinas – Grab the children, a copy of “The Grapes of Wrath,” and head down to Salinas for education and entertainment at the Steinbeck Center museum.
Kicking off its Big Read! program, the Steinbeck Center in Salinas is encouraging community members to join together and read John Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath” from late February through the end of March.
To jump start the program, the Steinbeck Center is offering two days of free admission to the museum for San Benito, Santa Cruz and Monterey County residents Feb. 24 and 25.
The Big Read! program was made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and includes more than 40 programs and events including wine tasting, book club discussions of “The Grapes of Wrath” and performances of book by local high schools.
