Compared with the state average, drivers buying gas in Hollister are generally paying less for a gallon of unleaded. A press release from AAA Northern California reports that the state average for a gallon of unleaded gas is $3.05 while the average price in Hollister, taken from 10 stations across the city, was about $3 as of Friday.

The cheapest gas in Hollister can be found at the three gas stations – Quik Stop, Texas Gas and Coast Oil – the latter two at the intersection of San Felipe Road and Santa Ana Road. All three stations had regular unleaded for $2.97. The most expensive gallon of gas can be found at either the Chevron or Shell stations, both on Tres Pinos Road, for $3.09 per gallon.

Since AAA’s last gas prices release in mid-July, gas prices have increased 16 cents, ranking California the third highest place to buy gas in the United State. The $3.05, however, is $1.07 less than the state average a year ago when it was at $4.12.

The release says that AAA analysts feel the recent oil rally was based more on optimism about the future prospects for the economy than on current supply and demand. Typically, as the economy improves as more oil is used. If investors think the economy is improving they will buy more oil because it’s a commodity they think will be in demand.

News that China was increasing its manufacturing activity and some possible positive news about manufacturing in the U.S. inspired investors to buy. The weak dollar also encouraged investors to purchase oil.

“Barring unforeseen events, retail gasoline prices should mimic the stability of oil prices in the short term, with the national average staying around or slightly above $2.50 per gallon,” said AAA Northern California spokesperson Matt Skryja in the release. “The president of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is further enforcing this notion; he seemed to imply the cartel won’t likely restrict its oil supply at a meeting next month as long as the price per barrel remains steady.”

The statement, when released, also says that the cheapest per-gallon average in the northern California had been found in Chico, Marysville and Modesto for $2.97.

The cheapest gas in the entire country was found in Springfield, Mo., at $2.38 per gallon, while the highest price per gallon average is in Wailuku, Hawaii at $3.56.
