Summer readers turn over 20,000 pages

The 20 children enrolled in the San Juan Bautista summer reading program read over 20,142 pages in just five weeks.

The children learned about the Dewey Decimal System and received bookmarks illustrating the entire system. Arts and crafts also comprised the curriculum for the program and children decorated visors, and made leather bracelets among other activities. A different prize was awarded to everyone each week. David Zacarte, a comic ventriloquist, also made a special visit to the readers.

The program culminated with relay races, water balloon games and an awards presentation. Certificates of achievement, free admission to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, coupons for free Round Table pizza and stuffed animals were also given to participants. The top 10 readers received all of the prizes. All prizes were donated to the program.

The children ranged from second to eighth grade.

CMAP invites local high school and college students and teachers in the Southern Santa Clara and Northern San Benito counties to enter the festival. There are nine student categories and one teacher category, as well as separate divisions for high school and college participants. The categories have been designed specifically to encourage classes of any subject matter to participate. There is no entry fee. It is a free festival for local students and educators. The deadline to enter is Friday, December 17, 2004.

“This is an open invitation to the local educational institutions to become involved in community television,” said Kelly Abbot, Operations Manager for CMAP. “We are hoping to open a door to educators for utilizing video technology as a vehicle for learning in our local community.”
