More than 6,800 San Benito County residents received Social Security benefits last year, according to recently-released data from the Social Security Administration.

The report listed the number of people receiving monthly cash benefits, including retired workers, surviving dependents and disabled workers. More than 4.8 million Californians receive the benefits, which total more than $5 billion a year.

Of San Benito’s 6,805 recipients, 71 percent receive retirement benefits, 18 percent receive disability payments and 11 percent get survivor benefits. By comparison, nearly 200,000 people in Santa Clara County received Social Security benefits last year, with nearly 77 percent of those receiving retirement checks, 13.2 percent getting disability payments and 10.1 percent receiving survivor benefits.
