Series will cover immediate impact and long-term effects of
quake
In the coming weeks leading up to the Oct. 17 anniversary of the
Loma Prieta Earthquake, the Weekend Pinnacle staff will be looking
at the effects of the 7.1 temblor 20 years later. The story
coverage this week includes a look back at the immediate impact in
the days after the quake and the change to local building codes, as
well as a story on the unique geology of San Benito County that
keeps large quakes from erupting within county limits but makes it
sensitive to quakes epicentered along stronger portions of
faults.

Upcoming stories will include a look at how local emergency personnel responded to the quake as well as how government’s view of emergency preparedness has changed; recent developments within the county to prepare for emergencies as well as how individuals can prepare their homes and work places for disasters; and a look at why scientists think California is due for a 6.7 magnitude quake or greater before 2032.
We will also be sharing readers’ memories of the quake in print and online. Submit memories of the Loma Prieta earthquake to the Weekend Pinnacle through e-mail, written letter or fax by Oct. 1. Limit word count to 75 words (longer submissions will be edited for space) and include your name, age, and city of residence.
