Twenty-five students from Calaveras Elementary School in Hollister have been selected to take part in a 28-week reading program to provide reading activities.

It was made possible by an $8,000 grant from Proctor and Gamble Corp. in Ohio.

The Young Readers Program was developed by the national League of United Latin American Citizens to encourage reading as a life-long habit.

“The problems facing our educational system today can only be corrected through the combined efforts of schools, parents and communities which is why we are committed to the Young Readers Program,” said Mickie Luna, national LULAC vice president for the Far West Region, in a statement. She also is a Hollister resident.

It is a weekly program to engage students in research-based activities that are entertaining and helpful for kids in building concepts and developing an understanding of the reading process, according to an announcement.
