After two water main breaks on San Benito Street occurred last week, Hollister city officials are in the process of deciding whether to replace the entire line from Nash Road to Fourth Street or to continue fixing the damage as it arises.

With three breaks over the last seven months on San Benito Street, including two last week, the city manager said that “in a perfect world, we’d go replace the line.”

“All of the breaks on the one (line) at the same time are associated with the first break,” City Manager Clint Quilter said.

At this time, city officials are considering the cost of repairs to replace the water line system under San Benito Street, which Quilter said is in an excess of 50 years old.

Quilter said that for every break, the cost to fix it is somewhere between $15,000 and $25,000, including labor and materials, while replacing the whole system is estimated at $2.5 million to $3 million.
