Laughable, ha

Recent charges against a Salinas lawyer and a supervisor-elect, have one caller worried about the county’s image.

“I’m calling about the article about Michael Pekin, (John) Sarsfield, and (Richard) Scagliotti. If anybody would come into this county and read the paper or read it online, the story about these people and many others would be a laughing stock, I’m sure. It’s getting so complicated I don’t think any of us can understand it. It’s not your fault as a paper…. I think we need to look at this whole issue in another light because it’s making this county a laughing stock.”

The caller is referring to the on-going legal battles involving lawyer Mike Pekin, who filed a corruption lawsuit against County Supervisor Richard Scagliotti and accused District Attorney John Sarsfield of having an affair with his office manager. To say the issue and allegations are complicated is an understatement, but interested readers can find numerous stories written on the saga in the Free Lance online archives at www.freelancenews.com.

RED PHONE ONE HOLD

“Every time I drive downtown when I come to the intersection of Fourth and San Benito streets, I find myself looking at the clock tower to see what time it is. I remember when we could do that and it was accurate. Now it’s a sight for sore eyes. Two clock faces showing two different times and neither is correct. Surely fixing this will add to the beautification of downtown Hollister.”

Indeed it will, but the clock is a towering problem considering Red Phone took its first complaint about this matter back in May. When the call first came in questioning what’s wrong with the clock, Red Phone took to the streets and learned from a tenant in the building that the building itself, and assumedly said clock tower, belonged to the Masonic Temple. Red Phone assumed a simple call to the Masonic Temple could clear up the quandary, but the group only meets on a monthly basis and repeated attempts to call the Masons at 637-2846 only resulted in a ringing phone – no answering machine. Not to worry though, Red Phone will keep calling until an answer is found, but for now this problem is on hold.
